Why Invest In Africa?
Africa is hungry for energy. Only 24% of sub-Saharan Africans have access to electricity according to the World Economic Forum and the demand is only set to rise with an increasing population, urbanization and economic productivity. The irony of Africa’s energy poverty is that Africa is extremely rich in energy resources but most of the energy potential on the continent remains unexploited.
It is important to acknowledge that Africa is vast and will test an investor’s patience in terms of the fact that time horizons and return models that fit other markets don’t always work on the continent. As such, many investors remain sceptical, but while the challenges and risks are real, the potential rewards are as well.
Over 50% of Africans are under the age of 25
580 million Africans still do not have access to electricity
Africa has one of the fastest growth levels in the world
With projected growth hitting 1.5 billion people and with some of the fastest growing countries in the world, Africa stands as the most profitable ground for investors within the energy and natural resources sector globally. Furthermore, the region is not only advancing economically but diplomatically too.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a significant opportunity for African countries to bring 30 million people out of extreme poverty and raise the incomes of around 68 million others who live on less than US$5.50 per day according to the World Bank. Investors will definitely have a key part to play in its potential success.
